Living in San Diego, you don't really have too many occasions to have to entertain a kid indoors so it's been a challenge since we moved to Tennessee, and especially this winter, for me to find creative ways to keep Wilder busy when it's just not feasible to go outside. Here's some of the things we've been doing inside in these cold cold months...
~~~~~
We've been doing lots of art projects and
just drawing/painting in general...
For this project I cut out or made pictures
of things that either belong in the sky or
on the ground and let Wilder glue them
where they were supposed to go. He was
so excited when he woke up from his nap
and saw this laid out on the table ready for
him to tackle. He did really well with it too!
So serious about it :)
The finished product. He got everything in
the right place! He insisted that the gorilla ride
in the back of the truck, which cracked me up,
and he kept putting the turtle in the sky
and laughing about it but eventually moved
him to the ground.
Mom, what? Do I have something on my hands?
He did this in craft time at storytime.
He said he gave the monkey eyebrows and a
mouth. Also look above the monkey's left ear...
Looks like he wrote "Paul"! I know he didn't do
it on purpose but I was so shocked to see that!
And I love seeing all the different marks
he makes -- lines, squiggles, dashes, and shapes.
This is a drawing he did of Paul -- hair on
top, beard on bottom :)
He said he was going to draw Ellie, the elephant
that he sleeps with, and I'd say he accomplished
just that! I was so impressed!!
Dada teaching him how to use
a ruler to draw a straight line
He LOVES to fingerpaint!
Super concentrated on his mini drawing board
"Mama, look, a snake!"
"Gave it eyes... and a nose!"
We've also been doing a lot of puzzles. He loves to
take pieces from multiple puzzles, mix them together, and
then work all the puzzles at the same time. Smarty-pants!
Reading is, of course, still a most favorite activity!
Wilder also loves to "help" us do anything in the kitchen...
Making our own pizzas has become a favorite thing for
Wilder and me to do when Paul is working late
Paul has gotten into brewing his own beer
and Wilder loves to help him "check" on it
He's started doing this thing where anytime
he hears me running water in any sink in the
house he runs and grabs his desk chair and
tries to nudge me out of the way so he can
"wash" his hands, the dishes, his trucks, etc.
It's not the most endearing habit of his ;)
He loves to stand in the chair across the island and watch
me chop up food or otherwise prepare meals. Sometimes
I feel like I'm doing a cooking show on TV because
he wants me to describe every single thing I'm doing :)
He thinks the dustbuster is a leaf-blower and
I haven't corrected him because, duh, he's
cleaning for me when he plays with it!
One morning while I was taking a shower, he used his
stepstool to climb up into Mama and Dada's bed. When
I came out of the bathroom, he patted the pillow next
to him and said, "Lay down right dere, Mama" and "Talk."
So I did and we lay there talking about four-wheelers
and dinosaurs and what we were going to do with Dada
that weekend and anything else that came to mind. Such
a sweet time with my sweet boy!
He loves to have a good old carwash
on the kitchen floor.
He gathered all of the trees from his train table
and said, "Look, Mama, tree trailer!"
In the bathtub one night he pointed out
that the pirate had a "booboo" on his eye.
When I asked how he thought the pirate
got the booboo he made up a whole story
about it: "Dived in water... swimmed down...
see fishes... crab pinched eye out!"
Haha, I love his creative mind!
He loves playing guitar with Dada
He thinks the ukulele is a Wilder-sized guitar :)
Working on his "Baseball Song"
With the weather so icky, it would be easy
to just turn on the TV and entertain Wilder
that way, but that is completely against
the way I want to raise him so except for
"Curious George" in the mornings I make
a point to not have the TV on at all during
the day. Since he turned two though we
have allowed him to watch a little more
on special occasions...
Snuggled up to Posey watching George
Paul and I have had a couple of "movie
nights" with him where we'll put on a
movie we've recorded and pile onto the
couch with a bowl of popcorn. So fun!
We also let him watch some of the SuperBowl
This was our version of "halftime entertainment" :)
His newest passion is cutting play-doh
with a plastic knife. He will sit there for
over an hour at a time and chop up his
"food" and talk about what kind of different
fruits and vegetables it is.
Chef Wilder :)
Last thing are a couple of recent videos...
Wilder is such a clown and loves to make people
laugh. One day when we were at Grana's house
he was riding her little rocking horse from when
she was a kid and I heard him over there going,
"No hands, Mama, no hands" in the silliest, most
dramatic voice so, of course, I had to get him to
repeat it for the camera...
And this one is of him singing his version of the
ABC's. I've been singing them to him for months
and months and every time I would get to the part
that said, "Next time won't you sing with me?"
he would say, "No!" haha and he never would.
But back in February he randomly started trying
to sing them on his own so I had to get it on video...
